About Hoan Huynh

The first Vietnamese American and refugee to serve in the Illinois General Assembly, Hoan Huynh was elected in 2022 and represents the 13th District. He sits on the General Service and Health & Human Services Appropriations Committees, the Health Care Availability & Access Committee, the Immigration & Human Rights Committee, the Housing Committee, and the Transportation: Regulations, Roads & Bridges Committee.

Huynh was born a refugee in Vietnam to Vietnamese and Chinese parents. His family received refugee asylum from the United States and was resettled in the early 1990s in America. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a master’s degree from Harvard University, Huynh became involved in community service, sitting on the boards of the Chinese Mutual Aid Organization, the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership, and Sarah’s Circle, where he served as vice president of the board. He also co-founded Celebrate Argyle, an initiative dedicated to reviving immigrant-owned small businesses in the West Argyle Business District. Huynh’s legislative priorities include expansion of economic opportunity, jobs creation, environmental justice, protecting reproductive healthcare, LGBTQ+, and immigrant/refugee rights, public safety and gun violence prevention, affordable housing, transit infrastructure, and expanding mental health access.
