About Josina Morita


In 2016, Josina Morita became the first Asian American elected to a countywide board in Cook County when she was elected commissioner for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. In 2022, she made history again when she was elected 13th District Cook County Commissioner, making her the first Asian American woman to serve on the Cook County Board. She is a founding member of the AAC, the vice-chair of the Cook County Board Environment and Sustainability Committee, and a member of 15 other committees, including criminal justice, finance, and workers’ compensation. 

Morita is an urban planner, a non-profit leader, and a longtime advocate for environmental justice, racial equity, and human rights. Her work on these issues has received local and national recognition, including the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform’s Emerging Leader Award, the Chicago Foundation for Women’s Breaking Barriers Award, Friends of the Chicago River’s “Spirit of the River” Award, the WaterNow Alliance’s National Water Hero Award, and a place in Asian Fortune Magazine’s 50 Young Asian American Stars in Politics. She currently sits on the Great Lakes Commission and the National Blue Ribbon Commission for Onsite Non-potable Water Systems.
